M
erry Christmas and Happy New
Year readers ~ depending on when
you receive your copy! I hope your
holidays were warm, memorable, yummy, and
lled with laughter and good times.
What better time to start your New Year o
right, than with Zumba, taking hour-long classes
with Certi ed Instructor Beto Gallardo at Delta
Valley Athletic Club in Brentwood. See page 26.
You might see me at the club running on the
treadmill, but please don’t look at my thunder-
thighs. My goal is to melt those pounds away with
a healthy new lifestyle.
Healthy and avorful food choices can be found
at Rick’s on Second in Antioch with owner Con-
nie Komar, see page 14. I’ve known Connie since
I was a kid growing up in Oakland.Together with
her husband Ron, they owned three Mexican res-
taurants called La Ultima, one on MacArthur Blvd.
in Oakland, the other two in Walnut Creek and
Danville. Plus she was my mom’s close friend in
Catholic high school at Saint Elizabeth’s on 34th Avenue. Because of the closeness, I al-
ways thought she was one of my cousins!
Just in time for Super Bowl, our feature article is on Bubba Paris, page 16. I had the
opportunity to hear him speak at church and was moved to tears. This three-time Super
Bowl Champion is a seriously gifted motivational speaker. You will walk away inspired.
Also featured is one of my favorite authors, Sue Grafton, page 18. She had me laughing
with her answers to my questions. Her page-turner books will do the same for you. Still,
another feature is a gal I met selling Stella & Dot jewelry, Kristy Poindexter. I bought a
beautiful bracelet from her and we got to talking. When I start talking to a person I just
met, this invisible white talking bubble hovers over my head and says, ‘hmm, now that
sounds like a story.’ I think in stories, and everyone – I mean everyone –has one! Check
out her story on page 20 and you’ll see what I mean.
Check out MorganWyeth’s beautiful photos from her book on pages 10 and 11 – once
you do, you will be motivated to visit (in person) the places she’s captured digitally. Be
inspired by Christine R. Santiago’s article about Javier Oliver-Keymorth and her poem
calledThe Dreamer on page 24. See how the Buttercup Farm in Clayton is turning vol-
unteers into gardeners on page 13. Finally, jump over to page 15 and visit Oakley’s newest
Visitors Center at Big Break, because it’s all about the Delta.
My personal goal with this issue is that you will be inspired to use the talents you have
within you, read some good books, eat some great food, burn o unwanted calories with
Zumba, and learn new things. Basically, in Kristy Poindexter’s words from her article,“live
life to the fullest.”
