Super Bowl time: what a perfect op-
portunity to teach a life lesson. There are
a lot of young players I’ve met along the
way who will tell me that they are ready for
professional sports, because they’re the best
on their team or in their league. I tell them
that in order to truly have hopes for an elite
NFL job, they must evaluate and prepare
with a
universal view
and not a
cultural
view
of their ability and preparation.
There are 32 NFL teams, with a man-
datory limit of 47 active players on each
roster.There is a maximum of 1,504 players
in the NFL during the season. In order to
occupy one of the 47 positions on an NFL
team’s roster, it is not good enough to be
the best on your team, or in your league.
You must be one of the 1,504 best in the
whole world. The number of players on a
team never changes. If five new players join
the team, five players who are already on
that team must leave. So you’re not com-
peting against the people in
your culture,
meaning your team, league, city or state; you
are competing against everyone in the uni-
verse that would like one of those 47 elite
positions on a team.This is true for anyone
who is competing for a top level position
in any profession. Except some professions,
the numbers of people who make it to the
top are even smaller.There can only be one
President of the United States, two United
States Senators for a state, and one Chief
Executive Officer for IBM. So in order to
compete at the highest levels, you must set
a goal to be one of the best in the world at
what you do.
