N
ow that we’ve grown up,
we know that’s not true. We’ve
become too cynical to let go of the
glaring problems we overlooked as
kids – my personal favorite being
the fact that Prince Charming
married Snow White,
Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella in
one lifetime.
The original fairy tale authors are
no longer living, but Chris Colfer
(Golden Globe-winning actor
best known for his role as “Kurt
Hummel” on Glee) offers his own
spin on their classic stories with
448 pages of his first novel, released
July 17 this year, published by Little
Brown Books for Young Readers.
The Land of Stories: The Wishing
Spell
tells the tale of twins Alex and
Conner as they become trapped in
their grandmother’s storybook.
In order to go home, they have
to collect fairy tale relics, like

Cinderella’s glass slipper and a
lock of Rapunzel’s hair, to activate
a wish-granting spell.
Throughout the twins’ dangerous
scavenger hunt, they learn the
fate of certain childhood fairy
tale friends. Goldilocks is now a
criminal, wanted dead or alive; the
three Charming brothers and their
respective wives rule the fairy tale
kingdoms, and Little Red Riding
Hood celebrates her new status as
an elected queen.
Although
The Land of Stories
is not an official sequel, Colfer
provides fresh insight into the
supposed happily-ever-afters from
our childhood.
Despite its whimsical nature,
The
Land of Stories
is also a coming-of-
age story. Anyone who’s ever felt
out of place – that is, everyone –
can appreciate Colfer’s treatment
of social misfits: that your self-
worth is determined by yourself;
that an ordinary, awkward kid can
become a hero; and that royalty is
not honor, and villains are nothing
but victims.
Colfer is a wonderfully spirited
writer, and his storytelling is more
charming than any prince can
ever be. The
New York Times
even
crowned
The Land of Stories
a
national best-seller for five weeks
in a row.
Famous author C.S. Lewis once
said, “Someday you will be old
enough to start reading fairy tales
again.”
There is no better place to start,
than with
The Land of Stories: The
Wishing Spell.
