Bleeds: Why you need them.
Explaining bleeds to someone who doesn't live in the prepress world can be tricky.
The "Coloring Outside the Lines" Rule
Imagine you are coloring a picture and you want the blue sky to go all the way to the very edge of the paper. If you stop exactly at the line, and then someone cuts the paper with a giant pair of scissors, they might miss by just a tiny bit. Even a tiny mistake leaves a distracting white line at the edge.
To fix this, we "color outside the lines" on purpose. We make the blue sky slightly bigger than the paper so that when the scissors cut it, they only see blue.
1. The Three Layers of a Page
When you set up a file, think of it like a target with three rings:
The Bleed (The "Extra" Zone): This is the part of your art that sticks out past the edge. It usually needs to be about 1/8th of an inch (.125") extra.
The Trim (The "Cutting" Zone): This is exactly where the big blade is supposed to cut. This is the final size of your flyer or business card.
The Safe Zone (The "Keep Away" Zone): This is the area inside the page where you put your important stuff, like words or faces. You want to keep these away from the edge so they don't accidentally get snipped off! It usually needs to be about 3/8th of an inch (.375").
2. Why do we need it?
In a print shop, we don't print on small pieces of paper. We print on huge sheets and then use a machine called a guillotine to chop them into the right size. Even though the machines are very smart, the paper can shift or wiggle just a tiny bit while it’s being cut.
Without Bleed: If the paper shifts a hair to the left, you get a white gap on the right.
With Bleed: If the paper shifts, the blade still hits color, and the customer never notices.
3. The Golden Rule for Customers
"If you want the color to touch the edge of the paper, it has to go PAST the edge of the paper."
A quick checklist before submitting your files:
Don't just stretch your photo: If you stretch it at the last second, it might look blurry.
Watch the text: Keep your words at least 3/8th of an inch (.375") inside the trim line so they stay safe.
Export with Marks: When saving the PDF, make sure to check the box that says "Use Document Bleed Settings."
