their feelings, because if someone
really ‘knew their truth,’ they fear
abandonment.We are conditioned
to not talk about our feelings be-
cause of fear.We wonder,‘if I say it,
will someone retaliate?’ Not many
people have a judgment-free zone
to discuss something going on in
your life- where there won’t be re-
percussions after the conversation
ends. That’s what talking to a pro-
fessional is all about.Through pro-
fessional counseling, I work with
clients to replace fear with peaceful
acceptance about their life.”
Open to all faiths, all types of
relationships and co-parenting,An-
nie says her practice is a uniquely
accepting place, where clients feel
a warm, relaxed environment in
which they can learn to live their
lives more joyfully and peacefully.
Also trained in psycho-phar-
macology (medications used to
treat mental health disorders), An-
nie knows when to refer clients
to a psychiatrist. “I’m a counselor,
so I do not prescribe medication
– that’s what a psychiatrist does –I
know when to refer you and I have
great resources as well,” says Annie.
“Not everyone struggling with
mental health needs medicine, but
some do, and I am happy to be a
liaison to you and your prescribing
doctor.”
A stereotype many have when
it comes to seeing a counselor is
the high cost involved.
“My philosophy is – finances
should not be the reason for some-
one not to get the mental health
help they may need. I offer a slid-
ing scale and take as many insur-
ance companies as I can. My full
rate is $155 an hour, but if you
can’t afford it and are ready to do
your hard work in therapy, I work
with you on what you can afford,
so you can come as often as you’re
ready to,” says Annie, who under-
stands financial hardships. “I grew
up in a low income, blue-collar
family with four siblings. I was the
first one in my family to go to col-
lege,” she adds. “Because I under-
stand families who struggle with
finance, I respect people who are
working hard to get their lives in
order.”
Annie also understands that in
order to help others, she must keep
herself in check.
“You can’t do this type of work
if you’re not taking care of your-
self,” says Annie, who practices
meditation, exercise and healthy
eating and leisure habits. “It is im-
portant to model wellness by tak-
ing care of myself, spending time
with my family, staying physically
and emotionally healthy and hav-
ing my work and personal life in
balance.”
Annie shares a shocking statistic.
“The average couple waits six
years before going to therapy. It’s
easy to put off, and it’s equally scary
to find out the truth,” says Annie.
“People have a difficult time ad-
mitting their vulnerabilities. And
rarely there’s a ‘right’ or ‘wrong,’
there’s about 1,000 things in the
middle. It’s all about what’s best for
‘you’ right now. I get people more
comfortable with the grey, instead
of the black or white.”
With a warm, home-style, yet
professional office suite,Annie and
her office staff, Corinne Bolanos
of Oakley and Megan McCarthy
of Brentwood, are able to offer
their clients a comfortable, safe and
trusting environment for them to
open up.
“The more information I know,
and the more truthful you are, I can
help you more,” says Annie.“It feels
as though you’re in a living room,
but you’re in a professional place.
I believe a more comfortable en-
vironment allows the opportunity
to take a lot of fear out of tough
conversations.”
Once a Community Service
Director for a school in Louisiana,
and currently a Brentwood Rotary
member and Girl Scout volunteer,
Annie says helping others is im-
portant to her.
“Living a life of purpose – for
me, it’s the whole point of this
life!” she says.
